...Do you know why the till was a little short that night? It's not because your employees were stealing from you. It's because most of your customers were on mushrooms instead of alcohol. ..

Year of the Dragon at GR2

Above is my submission for Giant Robot's Year of the Dragon exhibit, opening this Saturday at GR2 (with a reception from 6:30-10pm). Ink and screentone on series 400 bristol, framed (6.75 x 9"), $300. Please call 310-445-9276 to purchase. Show closes February 15.
SO Michael Kenny loaned me his copy of Gods, Men and Monsters from the Greek Myths last year. The illustrations in this book, by Giovanni Caselli, are tremendous. Highly detailed, though not boring, Caselli's drawing style reminds me of Eric Shanower's work on his own Age of Bronze comics.
There was a book signing at Family last Thursday for Kramers Ergot 8. At this event I was able to meet and chat with many well-known, accomplished cartoonists, including Tim Hensley (Wally Gropius, Fantagraphics, 2010). Speaking with Hensley, looking at his work again and watching him draw was the highlight of my evening.

Year of the Dragon also includes work by:
Andrice Arp, Robert Bellm, Aaron Brown, Elliot Brown, Stasia Burrington, Bjorn Calleja, Ako Castuera, Sean Chao, Louise Chen, Shawn Cheng, James Chong, Luke Chueh, Chris Cilla, Jesse Fillingham, Cam Floyd, Harrison Freeman, Renee French, Gabe Gonzales, Kio Griffith, Joe Hahn, Nao Harada, Hiro Hayashi, David Horvath, Kerry Horvath, Martin Hsu, Mark Ingram, Mari Inukai, Elizabeth Ito, Marc Johns, Jeremiah LaTorre, Little Friends of Printmaking, Tessar Lo, Bradford Lynn, Miso, Gary Musgrave, Mark Nagata, Ming Ong, Martin Ontiveros, Sana Park, Sidney Pink, Jarrett Quon, Jesse Reklaw, Sara Saedi, Ryan Jacob Smith, Dave Stolte, Ken Taya, Edwin Ushiro, Christine Vincent, Heidi Woan, Yoskay Yamamoto, Jeni Yang, Yejin Oh, Sashiko Yuen
Nezha Nao Hai, or Nezha Riots the Seas (China, 1979) is a great animated film about a boy who descends from heaven to battle dragons. You can see it here (with English subtitles):

Dear very kind person who called the police when they thought I was going to jump off the interstate overpass: That was nice of you. And I never want to deter you or anyone from making that phone call if you think someone is going to jump, or cut, or shoot, or swallow their way into the next life, BUT...

I concede, I lost. She told me she was not dating, and I failed to realize she meant she isn't dating ME. That's okay, I'm a rational individual. Except I'm not, you pants-wearing blond pretty boy. I'd put the irate in irrational if it were spelled like that, which it's not, and this makes me EVEN MORE IRATE! If you hurt my redheaded "hurricane," I will end you. Oh yes. I want to reassure you that the hammer is very real and its name is "Snidely WhipSMASH." If you don't intend on putting a ring on her finger, start learning Spanish, because I am never allowed back into Mexico. Water balloons. Lye. I have them. Also, your gauges make you look gay and you were adopted.

... I did everything in my power to be an amazing friend to you. I dropped plans at a moment's notice to help you out. I gave up other friends who are genuinely good people because you didn't deem them "cool" enough...
